A pioneer of eye surgery

Jules Gonin (1870-1935) is one of the great names in ophthalmology. Senior consultant and professor of ophthalmology at the Eye Hospital of the Home for the Blind in Lausanne, he focused most of his research on the detachment of the retina. He was able to identify the causes of this serious eye disease and came up with a surgical treatment which repairs the tear in the retina causing its detachment. His discovery found worldwide acknowledgement in 1929 and won him numerous awards.
